REAL ESTATE ROUND-UP: MONTANA'S CHARMING DOWNTOWNS

REAL ESTATE ROUND-UP: MONTANA'S CHARMING DOWNTOWNS

Though many people think of endless prairies or stunning mountains when they consider where to buy a home in Montana, the Treasure State’s vibrant downtowns aren’t to be overlooked. The Montana lifestyle is alive and well on Main Streets from Whitefish to Billings, reflecting our state’s pioneering heritage and the can-do spirit that continues today. Here are some beautiful luxury homes and outstanding residential real estate homes near some of the best places to live in Montana.

Billings

Billings gets its Magic City nickname from the way real estate in Billings sprung up seemingly overnight, going from just three buildings to over 2,000 in a matter of months during the late 1800s. Many of the downtown buildings still date to this era of exquisite craftsmanship, including the striking Parmly Billings Memorial Library building, which now houses the Western Heritage Center, and the Northern Hotel, which dates back to the 1940s and saw an extensive remodel in 2013.

Billings also boasts the Brew Trail, Montana’s only walkable brewery tour, featuring six breweries, two distilleries, and a cider house within a 1.5-mile loop. Be sure to appreciate the gorgeous art deco Montana Power Company building, built in 1914 and now home to the Montana Brewing Company.

Red Lodge

Though Red Lodge is often thought of as a gateway to Yellowstone National Park via the stunning Beartooth Highway, it also boasts an adorable, vibrant downtown packed with shops, restaurants, and art galleries. Most of its Broadway Avenue buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, making the Red Lodge area one of the best places to live in Montana for anyone looking for gorgeous scenery with easy proximity to a charming, historic small town.

Bozeman

Downtown Bozeman combines Montana’s frontier history with the funky energy of a college town. Music lovers will definitely count Bozeman as one of the best places to live in Montana: touring musicians come through the historic Ellen Theater and the local symphony and opera company perform at the Willson Auditorium. Live music pours out of the downtown bars and restaurants nightly, and summer brings Music on Main, a Thursday night concert series showcasing a variety of local bands. Music is just one of the many reasons to consider real estate in Bozeman!

Kalispell’s Main Street is more charming and accessible than ever, thanks to the recent completion of the Parkline Trail. This hike and bike path replaced 2.6 miles of railroad tracks in downtown Kalispell and now connects the historic downtown to the larger Great Northern Historical Trails, paved hike and bike paths that run from Somers to Kila. The Parkline Trail is spurring new development in downtown, from craft breweries to exciting new residential real estate options in Kalispell.

Whitefish

Thanks to its perfect location on the shores of Whitefish Lake and minutes from Whitefish Mountain Resort, real estate in Whitefish means proximity to an outsize amount of restaurants, shopping, and entertainment into its historic downtown. Over the course of one long summer afternoon on Central Avenue, experience the true small-town Montana lifestyle: Shop the boutiques and antique stores, refresh with a locally-roasted cup of coffee, peruse the local fruits and vegetables at the weekly farmers market, enjoy an upscale dinner, and wind up the day by taking in a play or concert at the O’Shaughnessy Center.
