Make the Most of Your Winter | Missoula Homes for Sale

When winter arrives, even those with well-laid plans and best intentions to adventure through snowy forests often find themselves in front of the fireplace, curled up with a blanket and a book instead. But now, in March, with a hint of spring in the cool morning air, many locals finally find the motivation to explore outside. If you’re interested in Missoula homes for sale, here’s a sneak peek at fun, nearby winter recreation activities!

Cross-Country Skiing — Locals favor four main areas for cross-country skiing. Lookout Pass, on the Montana-Idaho border, offers  7.3 miles of ungroomed trails right nearby Lookout Pass Alpine Skiing Area. Pattee Canyon Recreation area offers meandering loop roads through ponderosa forests. The Rattlesnake National Recreation Area—with a trailhead just five minute north of Missoula—offers incredible access to big wilderness. And the Seeley Creek Nordic Trails, a short drive to the north, is known for its extensive linked ski trail system. Most of these areas offer opportunities for snowshoers as well.

Downhill Skiing — Right in Missoula’s backyard, Snowbowl is a down-home, friendly ski area with 2,600 vertical feet. Only slightly farther away: Discovery Ski Area, Blacktail Mountain, Lookout Pass, and Lost Trail Powder Mountain. All are under-the-radar ski areas with an authentic atmosphere.

Ice Skating — Perfect for families, the Glacier Ice Rink is located at the Missoula fairgrounds. With both indoor and outdoor rinks, you can skate any day, no matter the weather. Public skating available through May.

Snowmobiling — Park your car at Lolo Hot Springs, and plan to enjoy a relaxing soak after a day ripping around the mountains. From this trailhead, you can explore 250 miles of groomed trails that reach out through the Lolo and Clearwater National Forests. You can also drive over to Garnet—now a ghost gold mining town—where there’s a 31.5-mile Garnet National Winter Recreation Trail, which showcases area highlights.
