A river runs through Missoula—and alongside it, what’s commonly considered the #1 marathon in the United States. The Missoula Marathon, which ranked above all others in 2010 by Runner’s World Magazine, and in 2017 and 2018 by The BibRave 100, is a Boston Marathon-qualifying race. And the miles fly by if you get lost in the scenery. (It’s hard not to.) Race Raves blog writes, “As evidenced by its rhapsodic reviews on RaceRaves, Missoula gets everything right, from pre-race communication to breathtaking scenery to spot-on support.”
Many participants gush about the supportive volunteers and encouraging Missoula residents. The runner’s community is strong here. Missoula’s local running club, Run Wild Missoula, hosts this marathon as well as a number of other races, from the Sweathouse Half Marathon in the Bitterroot Valley to the four-mile run during Missoula’s River City Roots Festival. Discover singletrack in the Lolo National Forest during the 11 Miles to Paradise event, attend Marshall Mountain Trail Festival to celebrate trail running and test the latest gear, or register for Striped Pig Wine Runs, a fun-loving 10K and 5K event on the banks of the Clark Fork River. There’s practically enough major running events to attend one every week. Just make sure to stretch out in between.
