Powder Magazine loves Whitefish, Montana! It’s no secret why — Whitefish is home to the best skiing in Northwest Montana. This charming town’s local ski resort, Whitefish Mountain Resort, is known far and wide for its tree skiing and soulful atmosphere. Want to be a local here? With PureWest Whitefish real estate for sale, you can call Whitefish your home hill.
Powder Productions, the magazine’s in-house film company, took a trip to our corner of the big sky to enjoy the bottomless powder that fell late this February. “From deep pow between the iconic snowghost trees to the bars like the Bierstube and Bulldog and Great Northern, Whitefish, Montana, should be on every skier’s bucket list,” executive producer John Stifter wrote. The skier’s magazine also recently published two short online guides to introduce visitors to our resort and nightlife. In Big Mountain, Small Town, Clare Menzel writes about how to ski Whitefish Mountain Resort, formerly known as Big Mountain, on a powder day. She covers many of our all-time favorites, like Connie’s Coulee in Hellroaring Basin and the longer, treed lines off Flower Point Chair. In The Five Best Skier Bars in Whitefish, Montana, Menzel offers suggestions for a pub crawl that’ll wet the whistle of any skier: start up on the mountain with the Bierstube, “a bar that prays as hard as you do for ‘more powder please,'” then head down to town for brews at Montana Tap House, Bonsai Brewing Project, the Great Northern Bar and Grill, and the Palace.
The media attention is totally warranted: Whitefish saw more than nine feet of snow in February, and on March 1, the resort passed the 300-inch snowfall mark, making this season one for the books. Whitefish is on pace to have one of the snowiest winters of the last 20 years! 2007/08 holds the current record, with an end-of-season snowfall count of 426 inches. (At this time that season, there was 352 inches of snowfall.) Big sky cold smoke has been falling light and consistently for days, perfect for endless powder turns.
“Locals are saying that this is one of the best seasons they’ve ever had,” said Dan Graves, CEO of Whitefish Mountain Resort. “Thanks to the last few days of powder we have some of the happiest guests and employees in the industry looking forward to making the most of the remainder of what could be one of the best seasons on record.”
