Glacier National Park is basically the backyard of houses for sale in Whitefish. Thing is, the park stretches out across more than 1 million acres. It’s a massive backyard. While the West Glacier gate is just a half hour from downtown Whitefish, East Glacier Park Village is a 90-minute drive away. It’s not too long, but if you want to fully experience the bald alpine peaks and dramatic valleys of the east side—and trust us, you do—you’d do well to wake up early. Your reward (aside from the views): a stop at Brownie’s Hostel and Bakery to fuel up before your day. A classic pitstop for thru and day hikers alike, Brownie’s is one of the nation’s top five hostels near a national park.
The small community’s charming watering hole is right on the main drag, and boasts a bakery, deli, and cafe. Grab an espresso and a pastry to help you wake up. If you forgot something at home, like bug spray, sunscreen, or snacks, there’s a general store. There’s also always good company, if you want to sit on the porch and stay awhile, as well as good advice for the Glacier Park neophyte.
After you’ve stopped by Brownie’s, you might be headed for a tour on Two Medicine Lake, on one of the Glacier Boat Company’s historic boats, the Sinopah. Maybe you’re planning to cover more ground, faster, on horseback with Glacier Gateway Outfitters. Or you’re about to set out into the park on foot. A favorite local’s day hike is the Dawson-Pitamakan Loop that connects two beautiful mountain passes. There are a lot of hiking options in this corner of the park.
A trip to the east side of the park isn’t quite a vacation—there’s no air travel, no advance booking required—but it’s too impressive and dramatic to feel like a staycation. It’s something in between, something spectacular, an adventure into your own backyard that will surprise and awe. Houses for sale in Whitefish are waiting to be your adventure base!
